Alain Daniélou
Alain Daniélou (* 4. Oktober 1907 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine; † 27. Januar 1994 in Lonay, Schweiz) ist ein französicher Musikwissenschaftler, Historiker, Indologe, Autor und Hochschullehrer.
Leben
Sein Vater war der bretonische Politiker Charles Daniélou und seine Mutter war Madeleine Clamorgan, Gründerin einer christlichen Bildungsorganisation für Lehrerinnen. Einer seiner Brüder war der römisch-katholische Prälat Jean Daniélou.
Daniélou studierte Gesang unter Charles Panzéra sowie klassischen Tanz bei Nicholas Legat und Komposition bei Max d'Ollone.
Sein Lebensgefährte war der schweizerische Fotograf Raymond Burnier, mit dem er in jungen Jahren nach Indien reiste, wo sie von der Kultur und Kunst des Landes begeistert waren. Unter anderem besuchten sie die Tempel im Ort Khajuraho, wo sie mit ihren Fotos der Tempelanlage später internationale Aufmerksamkeit erreichten. Die erste Fotoausstellung im New Yorker Metropolitan Museum waren Bilder, die von Daniélou in Khajuraho aufgenommen wurden. In den folgenden Jahren schrieb Daniélou mehrere Bücher zur Indologie, zu den Weisheiten der Veda, hinduistischer Philosophie und Shivaismus. 1949 erhielt Daniélou eine Anstellung als Professor an der hinduistischen University of Benares und wurde Direktor am Kolleg für Indische Musik. Daniélou schrieb über weitere 30 Bücher über indische Musik und Kultur. Er erhielt verschiedene Preise für seine Werke in der Musik. Daneben war er als Maler und Fotograf tätig. Daniélou erlernte klassische indische Musik in Varanasi mit Shivendranath Basu und erlernte das indische Musikinstrument Vina. Insbesondere bekannt ist er für seine wichtigen Werke zur klassischen indischen Musik. Daniélou übersetzte einige Werke von Swami Karpatri.

Preise und Auszeichnungen (Auswahl)
Daniélou war Officer der Légion d'Honneur, Officer des Ordre National du Mérite und Kommancer der Arts und Letters. 1981 erhielt er UNESCO/CIM Preis für Musik und 1987 die Kathmandu Medaillie der UNESCO.
